Cultural traditions matter
Among the many things I love about Abbott Elementary is the unapologetic way that they honor and celebrate cultural traditions that aren't otherwise uplifted and recognized ......until mainstream society finds value in them.
In 1987 RunDMC was just groundbreaking, trendsetting, and well on their way to being iconic legends in entertainment. From collaborating with Aerosmith to making hip-hop Christmas music they were amazing. You could not wait to see what they were going to do next.
This song was special because not all of our parents were sold on this new music called "rap". Most did not like it and some forbid it being played around them. But this song, we could play.....on our boom boxes!
About Value and Worth
We do not have to wait for something or someone to be considered highly valuable to the masses to appreciate it.
Young people throw out this insult to famous people: "irrelevant".
"You're irrelevant, so we do not care about your opinion."
I feel sad for them.
Because if they judge others that way, I feel sad for how they must feel about themselves. We all have days, week, maybe months at a time when we feel unappreciated and undervalued. Those are the days when self-love and self-worth have to kick in.
Everyone matters. When you reject the belief that others are irrelevant, it becomes easier to avoid falling into the trap of feeling irrelevant yourself during life’s toughest and most challenging days.
2. It reminds us to honor and celebrate our own healthy traditions. Value them even when no one else does. Personally, music sustains me.
Even if there was no technology to play music on, I have enough tunes streaming to last me for a lifetime.
3. Honor and celebrate ourselves. Value ourselves even if no fellow human being seems to. Do not hold out for other people to "finally" see your worth. You be that person. You are the person that you have always been waiting for.
You are your greatest gift.
