This is one of my favorite songs from girlhood. I LOVE the tone in her voice and listen to her song catalog regularly.  She is soulful. 

It was until I was deep into adulthood that I learned that the inspiration behind Candi Staton’s classic hit, “Young Hearts Run Free” was her own experience with domestic violence in her marriage. A marriage she almost didn’t survive. 

We can’t ever allow music to veer away from putting 
empowering messages for victims and Survivors in lyrics.

Unfortunately, on this planet, many of us female human beings have been programmed since childhood to “be nice”.   I implore you to consider unlearning that if you have not already.  

Consider that adolescent through adult males are infrequently given this advice outside of anyone beyond their maybe their mothers or female partners; but rarely their friends. 

Meanwhile, women and girls shun, silence, name call,  bully, and assault other women and girls for what they perceive as a failure to “be nice” to males.

Also, consider that “being nice” has not always served our health, safety, and well-being.  

Give yourself the gift of the strongest version of you possible.
